Why You Should Speak Out In Support Of Net Neutrality
Hi folks, I wanted to give you a bit of a public service announcement today. You've probably heard a lot of stuff in the news and on social media on Net Neutrality and how the FCC is planning to kill it off. You may have also been asked to contact the FCC and tell them to not end Net Neutrality and you're probably wondering, why should I care? I'm not typically the type to get political on my business site but I find this is a universal issue that everyone no matter what your political affiliation can get behind. This issue affects all of us, whether you are a small business owner or a retiree so I wanted to give you my expert knowledge on what Net Neutrality is and why you should be fighting for it if you aren't already.
In a nutshell, Net Neutrality means the government can watch over Internet Service Providers (ISPs), you know like Charter, AT&T, and all them, and make sure that they can't block or slow down your access to certain websites. This is important because let's say your ISP has an affiliation with Amazon but you dear reader run a small online store on Squarespace or some other online store builder and want to reach your customers. Naturally there is a group of people who would prefer to shop small business like yours so they find your website, except it loads so slowly that they can't use your site effectively. So guess what happens, they go to Amazon because it loads faster and they can get their shopping done. This is REALLY BAD for consumers that want to support small businesses and small businesses themselves. I could list many other examples but hopefully you get the picture. If you want another perspective though one of my favorite YouTubers has a good video on the subject:
I rest my case. So the FCC is planning on voting to end Net Neutrality on December 14th so time is of the essence. Here's how you can speak up and make your voice heard on this issue:
- Go to the FCC.gov website by clicking the button below (Make sure you do this on your computer or a large tablet because the site won't load well on phones).
- Enter under the Proceeding field 17-108
- In the comments write: I support Title 2 oversight of ISPs and I support net neutrality.
- Share this blog post with everyone you know!
Now I know some of my clients have already been spreading the word about this and that's awesome! If you think that some of your friends need more of an explanation on this issue then I hope this blog helps you get the word out better. That's all for now folks!
