How To Fix Slow Windows Updates

If you use Windows Vista, 7, or 8, you might be having a serious problem on your computer and not even know it. The problem is with Windows Update. In the summer of last year a major Windows Update bug happened that affected Windows 7 users the most, it caused Windows Update to take hours, even days to check for updates. The results were devastating! Windows would automatically check for updates in the background for a long time and people would end up shutting down the computer before it finished. Users would miss out on critical updates to keep their computers safe and secure. If an update check finally completed, it would fail to install updates because it missed updates that the update it tried to install depended on. What a mess!

Here are some things that might go wrong with your computer if you are suffering from this problem:

  • New programs or updates won't install with a strange error message
  • Windows Update gets errors and checking for updates takes forever
  • Certain programs or websites get errors
  • You catch a lot more viruses or crapware than usual
  • Your computer just starts acting weird or buggy

Fortunately, Microsoft has since fixed the issue, but here's the rub. Microsoft released the fix via Windows Update but with Windows Update being broken you may not have gotten it. Thankfully, Microsoft did release the update as a manual install, all you have to do is disable Automatic Windows Updates, run the file, reboot the computer, and re-enable Automatic Updates. If that sounds a little daunting, you're not alone. That's why I am providing you with 3 routes to check and make sure you get the update!

The DIY Route

If you want to try and fix it yourself, Microsoft has provided instructions. All you have to do is follow the link below and read the instructions carefully:
